Camping on Schiermonnikoog, with cows on one side and the mudflats on the other. That’s what you get at De Oorsprong campsite. A small-scale campsite with 25 pitches, situated in the polder on the quiet eastern side of the island, where it gets properly dark at night and you’re woken by the birds in the morning.

Prefer not to bring your own tent? Our furnished tents are ready and waiting. We have two ‘Duintentjes de Luxe’ safari-style tents, six standard ‘Duintentjes’ for two people and four ‘De Waard’ family tents for four people. They’re all fully kitted out, so you can get started straight away

Our campsite is situated right next to a working farm, in the polder on the eastern side of Schiermonnikoog. You’ll be camping between the salt marshes and the mudflats, just a stone’s throw from the Wadden Sea. No rows of tents on a tightly packed field, but spacious pitches on grass with lovely views. Ideal for those seeking peace and quiet, for couples, for solo travellers and for families.

The toilet block is 75 metres from the farm. Free hot showers, clean toilets, a laundry room and a fully equipped campsite kitchen with a hob, fridge and everything you need for cooking. If you fancy it, you can pop into the barn to have a look at the cows. Children can have a great time on the play area, the trampoline and in the sandpit.

From the campsite, you can hop straight on your bike. It’s a ten-minute ride to the village, a quarter of an hour to the widest beach in Europe, and you’ll soon find yourself cycling into the Oosterkwelder, the quietest part of the island where you’ll hardly come across anyone. The campsite is situated on the edge of the Wadden Sea, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.

’In the evening, it all quietens down. There’s little traffic, little light pollution; all you can hear is the sound of the sea and watch the sun sink into the North Sea in the north-west.

Do you want to really get to know the island? Then go on a mudflat walk starting from Schiermonnikoog. A few hours’ walk across the Wadden Sea when it’s at low tide, with a guide who shows you what’s living beneath your feet.

New to the campsite are our two ‘Duintentjes de Luxe’, designed in the style of a safari tent. They’re a bit more spacious than the standard ‘Duintentjes’, and you can stand upright inside them.

Inside, there are two fixed beds with bedside lamps and a bedside table. There is also a table with two chairs and crockery for two people. Electricity and Wi-Fi are available. You’ll need to cook in the communal campsite kitchen, and you’ll also share the toilet and shower facilities with the other campers.

Perfect for couples looking to get away and who want a little more space and comfort, without compromising on that outdoor feel.

As well as the two ‘de Luxe’ tents, there are plenty more tents waiting for you.
The six ‘Duintentjes’ for two people are the basic options: Helmgras, Duindoorn, Zeemelkdistel, Zeekraal, Zeealsem and Lamsoor. Compact and cosy, and all named after plants you’ll find in the surrounding dunes.

For families and larger groups, there are four De Waard family tents, each sleeping four people: Sternduin, Stuifduin, Kobbeduin and Willemsduin. The classic green-and-white tent, spacious enough to live in, with beds, cooking facilities and an awning for the evenings.

Not any more luxurious than necessary, just comfortable enough. That way, your holiday begins the moment you arrive, rather than two hours later when the tent is finally pitched.
